Living Desert Zoo and Carlsbad Caverns

This past weekend Liz and I went to Carlsbad, New Mexico.  She has been wanting to take me to Carlsbad Caverns for the longest time and it is honestly a sight to behold. Anyone who has not been, you need to go, it is amazing and just lets you know that there is a God and he has made some amazing, beautiful, sur-real sights in this world.

Friday: Living Desert Zoo

On Friday we drove to Carlsbad and checked in to our hotel. We then went to the New Mexico Living Desert Zoo. It was about 5 minutes from our hotel. It was great. It was fun. It was about 90 degrees out also.  We got some water bottles and started the tour.

The Bear is named Maggie and she is famous for painting with her paws. They had some for sell in the Gift Shop, they were a little pricey, but they would make some cool gifts.  McKinley was really inthralled with her. When we came around the corner Maggie was not out at all, but then she came right out of her cave and walked right up to us. McKinley did not take her eyes off her when she saw her.

The mountain Lion was relaxing and got really agitated when McKinley started to cry. You can see him looking straight at her in the picture with a not so nice look. He was beautiful though.

After the zoo, we went to eat and then went back to the Hotel and went for a swim.  The water in the pool was not what McKinley expected and she was not a happy camper. But we did get one picture of her swimming.   So her and Liz got in the hottub and warmed up.  It was a nice relaxing day.

Saturday: Carlsbad Caverns:

We woke up on Saturday and had breakfast at the Hotel and then put McKinley down for a nap. When she woke up we drove out to Carlsbad Caverns.  If you have not been, this is the scenery as you are driving out and you are thinking to yourself, there are no caves out here.

But then you get on top of this little mountain and there is the visitor center and i was looking around, and asked Liz, where is the cave enterance and she said we get to it on the inside. So we went in and paid and we decided to use the Elevator to get down to the Caves. When you get in the elevator you go down 750 Feet underground. It is amazing how fast the elevator goes. It took about 15 seconds to get down to the bottom, once you are out, you go out the doors and walk into the first cavern, and you can either go on the guided tours which we could  not go on because we had McKinley or go to the bigroom caverns, which we walked about 2.5 miles.  McKinley had a great time, looking around, she was making lots of happy noises and i think she liked that she was higher up on my chest so she could see more.  Lots of people stopped us and told us how pretty she was and how she seemed to be so happy.  She was doing good until the last 5 minutes of the walk through the cave, when it just got really humid and she got hot.

About 2 minutes after we left the cave and got in our car this is what we saw in the backseat.

Our little Peanut crashed. She was so so tired.

At the bottom of the enterance to the Park was a little gift shop with some great statues. I have finally found some aliens in New Mexico. They were not in Roswell, but in Carlsbad.  And this bear was really mean to Liz and I.

This was our last Family Vacation for a while. We are moving in 11 days to Coeur D'Alene, Idaho. We are excited and can not wait to get settled up there. We are looking forward to this new move and experiences.

Those pictures are so cool! I would love to see that cave! Is the bottomless pit really really deep? Did they say how deep it was? I like the bat too! Did you see any down there? Glad you guys had a blast! Excited to hear about your adventures as you move on over and up to Idaho! ;-)
